As we described in our April piece on the S.A.V.E. Act, Republicans are desperate to steamroll voting rights, most recently by redrawing Congressional district maps in their own favor. But at the state level, Democratic legislators and pro-democracy groups are fighting back, calling for immediate passage of a package of New York State bills called the “Hands Off Our Vote Voter Protection Priority Package.”
These bills are designed to:
- give voters extra protection if their right to cast a ballot is challenged (S3233/A6354),
- extend voting hours if polling hours or locations are disrupted (S4602A/A5846);
- protect voters from arrest at or in route to/from polling sites (S8596/A9345), and
- prohibit intimidation and protect the privacy of election officers (S8646/A10221).
As soon as you read this, please call Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie (518-455-3791), Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins (518-455-2585), and our State Senators and Assemblymembers to stress that this package must be passed during this current legislative session so these laws can be in place for the November midterms.
As we work full-tilt to get out the vote, we must also remain vigilant to guard against every effort to corrupt our free and fair elections.
