The DCDC is sorry to share the sad news that Hans M. Hass has passed. Hans died at his home on January 7, 2023. A funeral was held Sunday January 8 at the Islamic Awareness Center on Conklin Avenue, Binghamton, NY. Burial followed in Al-Tawheed Cemetery in the Town of Maine.
Sue Sklenarik, former Town of Sidney Democratic Committee Chair, shared these memories:
“I first became acquainted with Hans when he attended a Sidney Town board meeting. Bob McCarthy was town supervisor and there was the brouhaha over the burial of a Muslim on their property. Hans, in a very measured soft-spoken voice, disputed the board’s case, and by the time Hans was done with his position, I almost felt sorry for McCarthy. Hans subsequently became a member of our town Democratic Committee and also served on the town planning board. He was a valuable member of that board because of his extensive knowledge about construction as well as building codes. I was so saddened to hear about his passing.”
